LIVING IN BALANCE, PURPOSE & SUCCESS

The Power of Focus: How to Hit Your Business, Personal and Financial Targets with Absolute Certainty

by Canfield & Hansen (Author)

We Control The Focus of Our Lives, June 20, 2004

Reviewer: Philip Humbert from Eugene, OR United States

Frankly, I loved this book!

It is practical, easy to read, and it suits my philosophy that success is based on BALANCE, not on how much money, power or fame we accumulate. I have been a fan of Canfield and Hansen for many years, and I think I have read every book they've written, so you can accuse me of bias if you wish, but these guys are good! They know some stuff about making life work out well, and I appreciate that!

I don't recall seeing this phrase in the book, but the theme is that success is actually quite easy. Success is the logical and predictable result of doing the right things, in the right way, at the right time, and that is curiously EASY if we are focused and paying attention. What is hard is living a chaotic, confused and distracted life while we "hope" for success to jump up and bite us. It just doesn't work that way!

This is one you should OWN! Buy and read it. Put it on your shelf or the corner of your desk, and in six months read it again! Give it to your spouse or kids and ask them to read it, then talk about it! The power of this book is that it's so "obvious" - but only if we remember to DO the little things that make the difference. Don't borrow it from the library. Buy it. Read it. Keep it handy and plan to read itagain and again over the years.

First Things First

by Stephen R. Covey (Author)

Description: From Covey cynic to convert, June 29, 2001

Reviewer: Marie Jones from Johnson City, TN United States

I admit it, I was a Covey cynic. I hadn't read him, but had heard him quoted ad nausea. Now, I'm a convert. This thoughtful book transforms bland time management techniques into tools for re-examining your life in terms of personalized mission statements. In this rushed world, the idea of deeply knowing what you want out of life and making sure that your activities fit in with that knowledge is radically different. Balance is emphasized, with that balance organized around your roles in life and real human needs, "to learn, to live, to love and to leave a legacy." Covey divides all activities into four quadrants: 1.Important and Urgent (crises, deadline-driven projects) 2.Important, Not Urgent (preparation, prevention, planning, relationships) 3.Urgent, Not Important (interruptions, many pressing matters) 4.Not Urgent, Not Important (trivia, time wasters)

The idea is to keep your activities primarily in the second category and to consciously choose activities because of what's important, not because of what's urgent. Covey et al also provide a list of the "Wisdom Literature" from around the world to help you ground your personal mission and life goals in the philosophies that have explored these ideas through the centuries. Don't try to read this book without allowing plenty of reflection time. After you've read the book, you'll allow plenty of reflection time for everything.

The 8th Habit : From Effectiveness to Greatness

by Stephen R. Covey (Author)

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
The original seven habits of highly successful people are still relevant, but Covey, author of the mega-bestseller of that title, says that the new Information/Knowledge Worker Age, exemplified by the Internet, calls for an eighth habit to achieve personal and organizational excellence: "Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs." Covey sees leadership "as a choice to deal with people in a way that will communicate to them their worth and potential so clearly they will come to see it in themselves." His holistic approach starts with developing one's own voice, one's "unique personal significance." The bulk of the book details how, after finding your own voice, you can inspire others and create a workplace where people feel engaged. This includes establishing trust, searching for third alternatives (not a compromise between your way and my way, but a third, better way) and developing a shared vision. This book isn't easy going; less business jargon and more practical examples would have made this livelier and more helpful. But if organizations operated with Covey's ideas-and ideals-most people would undoubtedly find work much more satisfying. DVD not seen by PW.

Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People : From Effectiveness to Greatness

by Stephen R. Covey (Author)

Very good book even after 15 years, February 2, 2005

Reviewer: A customer from Vancouver

After listening to the tapes a year ago, the change I have experienced within this year is surprising significant. It has easily become the most important book I have ever read. The book focuses on the fundamental instead of being quick fix oriented, and I found it is very logical, subjective and truthful.

As with many other others, I am not a self-help book reader. Also I didn't read this because of any hype. Total coincidence why I picked it up a year ago, but I think the content speaks for itself. This is still very useful after that many years!

Today Matters: 12 Daily Practices to Guarantee Tomorrow's Success

by John C. Maxwell (Author)

Developing your Character based on Values and Committment, July 13, 2004

Reviewer: Robert Jimenez from Miami, Fl USA

Maxwell's teachings are both insightful and practical. The concept of developing the twelve fundamental aspects of success in professional and personal life - habits he collectively calls the Daily Dozen- is the main theme of this book. The identification of these "work areas" effectively helps us untie the knot of our cluttered and busy existence. Maxwell guides us through the commitments and decisions that we have to make on each aspect of our lives in order to be highly succesful people. More importantly, Maxwell strives to make us realize that success is not achieved at a future date through much work and effort, rather, he teaches us success is both a mindset and a lifestyle.

Maxwell delivers his insights in a refreshing and affirming manner, walking us through the benefits and demands of each Daily Dozen component. The fact that he shares with us his own walk toward mastering the Daily Dozen inspires us to realize we have what it takes to live on a higher level. The main theme behind his insights is that we must develop the courage to maintain our commitments, practice good thinking and live out our values.

Those who are ready to exercise the courage needed to implement these habits in their lives are bound to find this title of trascendental value. If we take Maxwell's advice, we would find ourselves amazed at the indifference (or ignorance) in which we approach ourlives and to the extent our day-to-day actions might be hindering our development and slashing our likelihood of being usccesful.

I recommend reading this book with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

by D Carnegie (Author)

Impressive soul, June 10, 2002

Reviewer: Sambhaav from India

I have been impressed with the Dale Carneige book 'How to win Friends & Influence People' ever since I read this book. It's a great possession and an asset - Get updated before you are Outdated! The book has remained the best in series of understanding human nature with the tips n tricks of the winning edge. I recommend this book to all who live with the hopes to reach the skies and shine with success. Money alone does not matter but its the very essence of human relations that bridges the gaps. The book provides not only information but is an attempt to form new habits to stay tuned with life. Carnegie believed that financial success is 15 percent due to professional knowledge and 85 percent to the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people. The book teaches the very skills to follow the principles and be a leader without a wee bit of resentment. Co-operation and how to deal with people, being a good conversationalist with the power of voice and interest people is jotted down by Dale Carneige in an amazing way. People are apt to make mistakes, but how to admit it and stop criticizing is a way to win friends. Nobody likes others to be bossy or take orders but in situations that arise, Dale figures out ways to tackle with techniques. How to win friends is a handy guide for every person, especially business people and should be on top charts in home library or work place. A wisdom book for healthy human relationships you can't ignore to read, after all. Apart from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, How to win friends is a 'Sure Pick' Enjoy!

Maximum Achievement : Strategies and Skills that Will Unlock Your Hidden Powers to Succeed

by Brian Tracy (Author)

Description: Should be 10 stars - Amazon, you need to go back to 10 stars, July 11, 2004

Reviewer: A customer
This is a remarkable work by Brian Tracy who is indeed a remarkable man. As Tracy tells us, he was quite a problem in his younger years, dropped out of high school and with no education was relegated to low paying dead-end jobs.

But then something changed in Tracy. He went into straight commission selling seeing an opportunity to write his own paycheck and met some very successful salesmen. He learned how to sell and sell well, but more importantly, he learned the miracle of personal development. He went to work on himself and the rest as they say is history.

In MAXIMUM ACHIEVEMENT, Brian Tracy will show you everything you need to make rapid advances in your life. Personally, socially, with your career, in relationships and more.

I remember when Amazon used to give ten stars. If they were still doing that MAXIMUM ACHIEVEMENT would be a true 10 star book. And there are not many books that I would say that about.

MAXIMUM ACHIEVEMENT is Brian Tracy's best work.
